Top Tips for running a Marathon

On the countdown to the London Marathon? Here are a few Pre-marathon tips from the FST team:

Make sure you taper properly, it is important that the legs are fresh to go on race day. If you haven’t started to taper yet, start doing it now. Rule of thumb tends to be that you should start tapering your runs from about 3 weeks before your big race to minimize accumulated fatigue. Getting a massage following your final long run before your taper period and race day can help aid recovery and reduce risk of injury. Forget the science behind it… your legs will thank you for it!

In general, massage can be hugely beneficial to your pre-marathon prep.

If you are a regular to massage, it’s a good idea to increase the frequency of your massages to about 1 per week in the lead up to the big race. Make sure you have your last massage no closer than 2 days before the big race.

If you are new to massage you need to take a slightly different approach. If you are looking to try out massage, book your first one in at least two weeks before the race so you can gauge the effect. Then plan your final massage for AT LEAST 3-5 days prior to the race – no closer, as you don’t know how your body will react.
